(Frontiers) LAL is an essential biotech resource for sterility testing of medical devices, but harvesting horseshoe crabs from the ocean to produce it puts pressure on vulnerable animal populations. In a new study, researchers have developed an animal-friendly, sustainable aquaculture method that yields an extra-potent LAL that can check for sepsis-causing bacteria and fungi in human blood.
